Delivering a 3D city model of Glen Eira in collaboration with state government
Problem
Glen Eira City Council had limited access and expertise with 3D planning models and analysis.
This restricted council’s ability to accurately assess complex planning proposals, provide detailed and accessible information to their community on proposed developments and led to an overreliance on external contractors completing 3D planning work.
Solution
Council used funding from the Digital planning grants program to deliver ‘Digital Glen Eira’.
The project provided council staff access to 3D planning software, allowing them to produce highly detailed 3D models of proposed developments in their community.
Benefits
Within council, planners have upskilled in 3D data capabilities, reducing the reliance on external contractors. Internal decision makers can now make more informed decisions based on detailed 3D models.
The new 3D models are also used during pre-application meetings with planning applicants to identify challenges prior to lodgement, streamlining the assessment process and creating greater efficiencies.
Council have made the models available to the public, allowing community members to visualise proposed developments in their neighbourhoods.
The high-quality 3D planning data has also been shared with state government, improving the understanding of Melbourne’s growth.
